Cup Challenge
This was an introductory activity to help students understand the importance of good communication and teamwork when working in science groups. As a team, students had to move the cups from one structure to a pyramid using a special rubber band tool. Each person must hold on to one piece of the string and working together manipulate the rubber band tool to grasp and move the solo cups. Students were not allowed to pick up the cups with their hands.
Design Challenge: Build a Bridge
Fourth graders participated in a civil engineering challenge. Students planned and created a bridge using only one material: toothpicks, popsicle sticks or straws. The bridge had to span a distance of 12", hold a pound of weight distributed across the bridge and one pound of weight in a centralized area.
Design Challenge: Build a Lighthouse
Fourth graders were challenged to design a lighthouse using their knowledge of working circuits. The lighthouse needed to meet the following criteria: light up a ship that is at least 16 inches away, can be turned on and off and constructed with only the available materials.
